Today the public pays for the privatisation of information, much of it trafficked by corpirates and sold at prohibitive rates. I had a story published in Quadrant Magazine in 2005 and one day recently I punched my name into Google and found my story on a Free Library site also one called Highbeam Research. I emailed these people and told them they did not have any copyright, that I held the copyright, so I sent an invoice. They took the story from their site but failed to pay!
